Today there was an earthquake in Iceland, one of the big earthquakes rarely get and are called Sudurlandsskjálftar, or South side quakes. Today's was approximately 6,2 on the Richter scale. You could feel it quite well in Reykjavík, but there were no serious damages I know of. The towns of Hveragerdi and Selfoss were not so lucky, as they are much nearer to the origin of the quake. Thankfully, living on a fairly active island, we have had the sense (and funds) to build houses strong enough to withstand earthquakes and so there was no serious or life threatening damage I know of. There was a family near Hveragerdi whose sheep house collapsed and they lost quite a few sheep to that though, but that seems to be the greatest casualty I've heart of yet. (If you know of any more, you're welcome to correct me as I don't claim to be a 100% accurate, only reporting what I've heard myself.)
My grandparents live in the east side of Hveragerdi, very near the origin and so they felt it very well. Their house did not sustain damage, but the inside of it was a complete mess. My mum, brother and I rushed there after work to help them clean up and although they'd put the living room shelves back up and moved the fridge back, it was still pretty messy. But as they say, a picture says more than a thousand words, and I have quite a few pictures.
